Event Details

American drummer/composer Robert Castelli brings his all-star quartet to Hideaway for what will surely be an explosive and exhilarating show, bringing Big Apple street funk together with influences from Latin, Brazilian, African & Eastern music together in a truly original way.

“mixes witty melodies with tough swing and nasty funk” Time Out

“A feast of styles, from World Music to tasteful brushwork” Rhythm Magazine UK

American drummer Robert Castelli was born of a musical family in upstate New York and is now based in Vienna where he plays and composes for Musical Theatre. His band – the Boom Quartet – has received continual praise in the USA and Canada, receiving this accolade from Allaboutjazz.com, “…this is get-down, get-greasy and get-dirty music that’s still delivered with finesse and invention.”

Castelli’s sweeping yet cohesive range resonates with Big Apple street funk, rich sonic textures and a touch of irreverence – a genre perhaps defined as the polar opposite of smooth LA jazz. Since the band’s performance at London’s Pizza Express in 2009, the response from critics and audiences alike has been overwhelming for the New York drummer.

The UK version of the band plays his music with the same energy, prompting saxophonist Gilad Atzmon to say of them “Like Weather Report on a good day!” They were particularly well received at Brecon Jazz Festival, showcasing Castelli’s unique and original blend of jazz, funk, Latin, Brazilian, African & Eastern influences.

Alongside Robert on drums, the Boom Quartet has featured Nic Meier on guitar, with Greg Heath and Brandon Allen sharing saxophone duties, and both Davide Mantovani and Nick Kacal featuring on bass. Other star talents who have played with the Boom Quartet include Atzmon and fellow saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, so this gig really is an appointment to enjoy the very best in UK-based talent.

“…a muscular but intelligent brand of fusion and funk.” Ian Mann (jazzmann.com)
