Event Details

Whilst swing music was still dominating as American music entered the 40’s, a group of young musicians would be up to the early hours of the morning experimenting with a new sound that would eventually flip music over its head.

MINTON’S PLAYHOUSE Harlem NY would become the home to musicians in search of a new sound that had no limit to what they were trying to express. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell and others created a playground for musicians to create in a way that no one could have ever imagined before. Charlie Parker – ‘Bird’, and his contemporaries innovated a whole new approach to the way jazz music was played, not only on the saxophone, but all jazz instruments. His approach to improvisation provided ‘freedom’ from the pop culture of swing music as they represented musicians for the first time as intellectual artists rather than entertainers.

With Kevin Camrass on sax and Matthew Collins on trumpet accompanied by a rhythm section of Casper Tromp on piano, Hamish Gullick on upright bass and Philip Lombardo on drums, the legendary, controversial and iconic BEBOP SESSIONS will be remembered one night only at Foundry616.
