Event Details

The EFG London Jazz Festival has a worldwide reputation for presenting the very finest in cutting-edge jazz. You’ll be able to hear a wide range of artists producing exciting, challenging and daring music that will astound and astonish, delight and discombobulate. That’s exactly what The Jazz Repertory Company will be doing in ’The World Gone Mad’ – only our music is over a hundred years old.

In 1919 American jazz musicians created a sensation when they appeared for the first time in Great Britain. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band arrived first and shortly after came The Southern Syncopators featuring the great jazzman Sidney Bechet.

Along with the music of these American musical pioneers we’ll be presenting weird and wonderful music, mainly from British composers which was a response to the revolutionary sounds coming out of America from the 1890s onwards. Most of the music has been completely forgotten but it’s the dawn of the blending of African-American and European traditions which has subsequently gone on to conquer the world.
