Guitarist Ray Russell celebrates his 70th birthday at the 606 will an All-Star gig! Who is Ray Russell you ask? Well the praises of this guitar hero have not been sung enough of late: his studio & session career goes back to the 1960’s when at the age of 16, Ray began playing with the John Barry Seven (noted for the James Bond Theme – Barry worked on 14 James Bond soundtracks in all). Ray’s versatility led to sessions with artists including Gil Evans, Tina Turner, Van Morrison, Art Garfunkel, Dionne Warwick, Bryan Ferry, Jack Bruce, Cat Stevens, Phil Collins, Robert Plant, Mark Isham, Georgie Fame, Heaven 17 & many other popular names. His own taste however skewed toward jazz fusion and experimental progressive and psychedelic rock, as heard on his early recordings for the Columbia label. Now a successful composer for film & TV – his music has been featured on “A Touch Of Frost”, “The Jump”, “Stay Lucky”, “The Alleyn Mysteries” – Ray also received an ASCAP award for “for most played music on American television”. Ray has invited a number of stellar associates to join him onstage for this birthday show, including saxophonists Iain Ballamy, Andy Mackay & Tony Roberts, drummers Alan Rushton & Ralph Salmins & fellow guitarists Martin Taylor & Phil Hilborne.
