GENRES: Contemporary Jazz

ESQUIVO unites a collective of musicians around the idea of cross-pollination. Their eclectic compositions – though rooted in jazz – explore a plethora of stylistic influences, geographic confluences and mood-swings. Get ready to be taken on a musical journey that touches all corners of the soul from dark and gloomy to euphoric and bright.

Founded in 2015 on the back of an improvisation and composing collaboration between Sicilian guitarist Fabrizio Brusca (Manziluna) and German jazz singer Sylvia Schmidt (White Flower, Mimika Ensemble, Miss Smith Jazz), ESQUIVO has only just started exploring the uncountable ways of creating music. Mixing genres from jazz to Mediterranean folk, from samba to rock to bop, indeed elusive is the sound of this new exciting band whose heartfelt music is much rather described in emotion and motion then in the blunt narrow definition of a style.

As a result of Sylvia’s studies within the rich Middlesex jazz family ESQUIVO also celebrates her long-standing friendship and collaboration with Italien pianist Maria Chiara Agiro (These New Puritans, Teotima, Maria Chiara Agiro Quintet) and Greek bass player Thodoris Ziarkas (Valia Calda, London Improvisers Orchestra, Kalia), each of whom have added their own musical background and unique approach to improvisation, composition and ensemble play to the mix.
