Located in the heart of leafy Herne Hill, South London, right opposite Herne Hill train station on Railton Road, Agile Rabbit Pizza Bar is a new jazz venue with an interesting difference.
Following the success of Agile Rabbit Pizzeria in buzzing Brixton Village – where its arty, punky jazz roster and acclaimed pizzas have won the restaurant an army of fans and awards! (it was recently voted Eat in Brixton’s favourite restaurant 2018) – Agile Rabbit Herne Hill offers a similarly vibrant mix of fantastic food, dinner, lunch and brunch along with high calibre jazz in a funky restaurant setting.
Showcasing rising stars and hot new names from London’s jazz scene, music is integral to Agile Rabbit’s style and ambience – and when the bands are taking a break our resident DJ keeps the jazz fires stoked with his eclectic mixes of classic and contemporary jazz.
People often ask ‘why are you called The Agile Rabbit?’. Well, this is the story. The Agile Rabbit is loosely based on the original cabaret bar by the name of ‘Lapin Agile’ in Paris, [translated ‘The Agile Rabbit’].
Lapin Agile opened circa 1860 and became a favourite spot for struggling artists and writers, including Picasso, Modigliani, Apollinaire and Utrillo. The basis upon which they would trade their artwork in exchange for food and drink.
Lapin Agile is made furthermore famous as it is depicted in an extremely famous painting by Picasso, named ‘Au Lapin Agile’ [At The Agile Rabbit’]. Picasso paints the scene from within Lapin Agile, depicting live music, food & drink and, of course, a social and fun atmosphere.
That’s us. Jazz, pizza, food, great beer and cocktails. What’s not to love?
